Home Signature Homes Construction Green Building
THE SUSTAINABLE AMERICAN DREAM One hundred, fifty—even twenty-five years ago, homes were built with little thought of the impact on our planet’s overall well-being. Today, we have the knowledge and responsibility to do better. A host of “green” or sustainable options are available in building and operating our homes. Basically, these can be broken down into three inter-dependant categories:
Materials
Good choices here can make a tremendous impact. In many cases, the difference between sustainable materials and those that will not be replaced is simply a matter of researching suppliers. The same is true of the processes by which these materials are produced, harvested or manufactured. And while two materials may look similar and cost about the same, one will often prove significantly more “green” in its installation, function over time, and the disposal of waste material. Also, there is great variety in the ways that different materials react to heat, cold, humidity and everyday use. This can have a dramatic effect on energy use, longevity and the home’s interior environment.
Every component and appliance found in a Brian D. Wiggs Signature Home, from the unseen bits of plumbing, electrical and gas handling infrastructure to the state-of-the-art kitchen conveniences and heating/cooling system, is chosen for its efficiency, reliability and convenience.

Design and Construction
Some of these considerations are obvious; proper insulation, energy efficiency and best use of natural factors have been important parts of conscientious design for some time. Solar and other passive systems can save the homeowner money while saving wear and tear on the planet. But how these design elements are applied, the techniques and methods used in their construction or installation, often represents another series of choices for the builder.
As a young man, Brian D. Wiggs learned to enjoy the outdoors with the philosophy, “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.” Today, a similar philosophy helps guide his work as a builder.
The design phase offers many opportunities to “get it right from the beginning” where environmental issues are concerned. We are always eager to hear the homeowner’s ideas, and experience allows us to present many options for a “greener” home.
Owner Operation
One “knock” against early attempts at environmentally-friendly living was inconvenience. Initial technologies and methods often required extra effort or sacrifice from those interested in “greener” living. Our goal is to provide efficiency and a softer “footprint” without compromising comfort or convenience. |
